Question:

Philosophically, can vegetarians have jobs where one of the duties is handling/serving meat or meat products?

I am a vegetarian and have been looking for a job that would have nothing to do with meat for months now. I've applied to countless places, but I haven't received one call (and my record is absolutely fine). I know that food service usually has more open opportunities at any given time. I'm desperate and becoming more open to taking up a job where I would handle meat. But---can vegetarians be compatible with such food-related jobs?

  1. i dont think so. i mean i was actually talking to my vegeterian friend, and we have family consumer.--where you cook and everything. and she said i'm not handling the eggs. i asked why, and she believes it's against the vegeterian way.

Yes, repugnant to you as it may be, for the same reason, someone who doesn't drink alcohol might serve or be in the midst of people who DO drink alcohol.  You can make the choice of what you put in your own body, but you do not govern what others choose to do (sometimes unwisely or without much thought).

Only if you're comfortable.  Your mental health is more important than the bills, honey.  So if it's going to trouble you to death, you'll probably just end up quitting or end up in a psych. hospital.  However, if you really are willing, go ahead.  As a vegetarian I bid you the O.K.  You're just filling in someone else's spot who would do the same thing...at least you're not the one consuming the food that causes environmental, moral, and health degradation.

  4. Try the convenience store business they don't handle meat and always need night shift people.

  5. There are as many answers as there are vegetarians.

    This is because each person's diet is their own decision.

    Your decision may be based on:  simple health factors (balanced vegetable protein is healthier), economic factors (grains are less expensive than steaks), spiritual or religious factors (Jainism, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc.).

    Imho, the answer is "Yes, vegetarians are ethically able to serve meat products."  If you aren't working, you suffer; if you believe vegetarianism to be life-enhancing, you are a morally advanced individual, and deserve to work at least as much as a meat-eater.  If you are not killing the animal, but selling it, you are not harming the animal population, as the slaughter will continue regardless of whether you handle the meat products or not--because other people want the product.  If you are a teetotler, you may "serve beer in a bar" with the same moral rectitude.  In fact, your "vibration" sets a higher tone in either place, if your behavior is indeed a step forward/upward.

  7. I have a strange diet.  I only eat vegetarians medium rare.  Thats how I get my vegetables.

  8.   It may not strictly be a question that can be answered, although being such, you are following a belief, perhaps even a philosophy, and for that you should be applauded.

      I suspect it might conflict with your beliefs, but to "touch" meat" or deal in serving it to others, should not be harmful to you at all. Your "moral" judgements about meat are not something any of us can argue, and choice is our greatest freedom.

      Would your name tag claim that you might be a Vegan? I bet not. Would you judge others who bought  the # 3 burger meal, or want them to judge you for abstaining?

      If working around meat products causes you to be physically or emotionally ill, then perhaps you should seek other areas of employment. ALTHOUGH even working in Corporate America, on the 26th floor, for an insurance company, someone might ask you one day if they can bring you back lunch, since they are going to "Hot Dog Heaven."
