Phoenix Coyotes, top prospect Kyle Turris far away from signing -NHL News Update
Phoenix Coyotes might have had one of their worst years last season, but it does not seem like that their woes will be ending anytime soon. Negotiations with former top prospect, Kyle Turris, have come to a halt and do not seem to be making a breakthrough
any time soon.
Turris, a former third overall draft pick, during round-one of the 2007 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft by Phoenix Coyotes, ended his three-year, entry-level contract earlier in July and is yet to reach a deal with the club, which has stalled his
career at the moment.
In earlier reports, Turris was learned to have been demanding a long term contract worth nearly $12 million or more, but observing his past performance, Coyotes were not prepared to give up such an amount without seeing more output from the players’ side.
"Once you're a proven 30-40 goal, 80-point guy, yes, you get the brass ring. But until you get there, then you have to settle; well, again, that's what makes America great, he doesn't have to settle. He can stay at home and watch Oprah", Coyotes general
manager, Don Maloney, said.
Being a high former draft pick, Turris was expected to put up big numbers, something in the Sidney Crosby or Steven Stamkos range to uplift Phoenix, but that was never the case.
Seeing his 25 point (11 goals, 14 assists) performance last season in 65 games played, it is certainly hard to argue with Phoenix management in their defence of wanting to see more performance.
For Turris, it might seem like the end of the road, but Phoenix is willing to compromise and give him more time to develop, with the condition of no elevation in pay.
"We're open-minded we'd like to have Kyle back. We wish he was here today. But we're going to move forward and not going to think about him again until some point before I'm a hundred", GM Maloney added.
Expecting to reach an agreement soon, doing it before the regular season begins would be optimal for the 22-year-old rookie, or else it just might be a break in his freshly started career, which is never good.
