Phoenix Coyotes crush Colorado Avalanche 6-1 – NHL Update
Shane Doan and Boyd Gordon scored twice while Gilbert Brule and Rostislav Klesla scored one apiece as Phoenix Coyotes ended their three-game losing streak by defeating Colorado Avalanche, 6-1, in the National Hockey League (NHL) game to win their second
straight home game on Monday, January 16, 2012, at the Jobing.com Arena in Phoenix, Arizona.
Coyotes’ goalie, Mike Smith, made 38 saves during the game.
“The great thing about today was getting contributions right through our line-up", Phoenix coach, Dave Tippett, said.
"We talk about our identity, and that's where we have to be all the time. We had a lot of people chipping in".
The Coyotes were dominant right from the start. Although they gave away a goal in the first period, they maintained their control on the rink for the rest of the time.
The hosts were the first ones to score.
At 5:24, Paul Stastny was sent off for two minutes after he hooked Taylor Pyatt.
The shorthanded Colorado side faced an attacking stance from the hosts during the power play.
Keith Yandle finally managed to make a scoring move as he sent the puck to Brule, who scored through a quick slap-shot.
The Avalanche was not late to respond.
A couple of minutes after the goal, Erik Johnson slashed the puck towards Chuck Kobasew, who managed to deflect it off into the net to beat Smith and level the score.
That was, however, the only cherishing moment for the visitors.
At the end of the period, Doan received a pass from Yandle and outsmarted the opponents to take the lead back.
Doan scored his second goal of the game in the second period when he tipped the puck into the net after it was sent into the zone by Chris Summers.
The hosts extended their lead when Boyd Gordon scored his fourth goal of the season.
Gordon had beaten his marker which was handsomely judged by Ray Whitney who sent the puck to Gordon, making no mistake in beating the goalie to take the score to 4-1.
In the third period, Gordon once again came into the limelight, scoring his second goal of the game. It was the first time in his career that he recorded a two-goal game.
"I think Doaner is more used to (being set up on every shift) than I am. The guys were great getting me some shots", Gordon said.
"For me, I don't score too many goals so getting two for me is pretty special".
The Coyotes were not settled yet.
Rostislav Klesla struck the final nail in the coffin to guarantee the victory, assisted by Brule and Kyle Chipchura.
Hoping to end their three-game losing streak on the road, Coyotes are now going to face Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday.
The Avalanche, who were handed down their fourth defeat in the last five games, will take on Florida Panthers the same day.
