Phoenix Coyotes extend General Manager Don Maloney's contract – NHL Update
Phoenix Coyotes may not have been able to break into the 2013 National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup Playoffs like they did last time, but the Western Conference club thought it would be best to retain General
Manager Don Maloney’s services for the coming years.
In an official announcement by the NHL franchise, GM Don Maloney was signed to a long term contract extension, of which the terms and conditions were not released by the club.
"We are very pleased that Don has agreed to sign a long-term contract extension with the Coyotes," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement issued by the team. "Since joining the team in 2007, Don
has done an outstanding job managing his team and building a competitive roster that has produced on the ice, even given less than ideal circumstances off the ice. The NHL remains committed to securing the Coyotes' future in Glendale under new ownership, and
we believe Don's long-term agreement evidences that he is equally committed."
There is no doubt in the dedication Maloney has shown throughout the years after he took over the top spot in May of 2007 and ever since, the Phoenix Coyotes had a number of issues which he dealt with gracefully.
Earlier in the past season, Phoenix faced issues such as ownership not being present and whether they would retain their position in the same city, along with captain Shane Doan threatening to move on to another team, but luckily all worked out well in the
end.
At the end of the 2011-2012 NHL regular season, Phoenix stood at number three in the Western Conference with a record high 97 points and topping the Pacific Conference for the first time ever. This was seen to
be the fruit of signing on Don Maloney, but as Phoenix failed to gather the same momentum this time around, fans had doubts on whether the franchise ownership will retain him or not.
Phoenix finished off at number 10 this time around with 51 points, but the shortened season definitely did bring about a lot of disappointment for many teams, of which the Coyotes were just one of those.
