Phoenix Coyotes re-sign Danish forward Mikkel Boedker to two-year contract –NHL offseason Update
After his three year entry-level into the National Hockey League (NHL) expired, which was worth an estimated $1.725 million per year, Phoenix Coyotes have now re-signed the Danish left winger, Mikkel Boedker, to a two-year contract on Wednesday, of which
the financial terms and conditions have yet to be released.
The news has not yet been made official by the club or Phoenix team but has been twitted by reporters from The Sports Network (TSN) and SportsNet through social networking website, Twitter.
“Hearing PHX and Mikael Boedker have agreed to terms on a new contract”, tweeted TSN broadcaster, Bob McKenzie.
Picked up as the eighth overall during round-one of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by Phoenix, Boedker has yet to perform as well as he did in his first major league season with Coyotes. It was during the 2008-2009 regular season that the 21-year-old participated
in 78 matchups and contributed 28 points (11 goals, 17 assists).
He managed to play on 14 games the following season and registered a mere three points (1 goal, 2 assists), while continuing the remaining part of the season with Phoenix’s affiliate club in the American Hockey League (AHL), San Antonio Rampage, and potting
38 points (11 goals, 27 assists) in 64 contests.
Boedker managed to retain his image in front of the Phoenix management, which eventually led them to extending his contract after playing in 34 matchups and registering 14 point (4 goals, 10 assists) and finishing off with a plus-minus rating of 11.
These next two seasons, if Mikkel Boedker manages to last that long, are crucial for his existence in the NHL and judging on the weight of the situation, he is expected to perform and improve his progression by leaps and bounds rather than simple steps.
Last season also gave Boedker his first chance at the postseason and played in all four of their games, picking up a single assist, but faced a embarrassing 4-0 defeat by Detroit Red Wings. Gaining such valuable experience and still at the age of 21 may
be the true reason why Phoenix has chosen to retain a player who still has many peak years ahead of him.
