Phoenix Mercury, Los Angeles Sparks and Seattle Storm win- WNBA Roundup July 30, 2011
On Saturday night, three games took place in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Here is a brief review of the three games:
Phoenix Mercury 91 – New York Liberty 84
Phoenix Mercury snapped their three-game losing streak with a 91-84 victory over New York Liberty at Prudential Center.
Penny Taylor topped all the scorers of the evening with 29 points, four rebounds, three steals and three assists. Taylor hit shot 8 for 13 from the field and 11 for 11 from free throw line. Diana Taurasi scored 16 points, grabbed
three rebounds, dished out three assists and had two steals in the victory.
Nicole Powell had a team-high 16 points, a game best six steals, four rebounds and three assists in the losing effort. Plenette Pierson posted 15 points and Cappie Pondexter chipped in with 13 points, three assists and three rebounds
for New York. Essence Carson added 12 points while Kia Vaughn totalled 11 points and 10 rebounds for Liberty, who rose to third in the Eastern Conference with a 10-8 record.
Dupree scored 10 of her points in the first half as Phoenix carried a 42-36 lead at halftime. The Mercury struck back after the break and converted the six-point first half deficit into a 66-65 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Phoenix then opened the fourth quarter on a 4-0 run to take a 70-65 lead early in the quarter, and never trailed for rest of the period.
Los Angeles Sparks 88 - Chicago Sky 84
DeLisha Milton-Jones scored 19 points and grabbed four rebounds as Los Angeles Sparks defeated Chicago Sky 88-84 at Allstate Arena, snapping their four-game losing streak.
Tina Thompson punctuated 14 points while Jantel Lavender added 13 points and six rebounds in the victory. Kristi Toliver racked up 12 points and Noelle Quinn recorded 10 points for Sparks, who have won just three of their previous
12 games.
Erin Thorn led Sky with 17 points. Epiphanny Prince and Sylvia Fowles had 16 points each in the defeat.
Los Angeles maintained a 51-35 lead at the end of the first half. However, Chicago outscored the Sparks 23-15 in the third quarter and cut the deficit to eight, 66-58, at the end of the quarter. In a tightly contested last quarter,
the Sky found their way to make it a two-point contest, 84-82, with just 20 seconds to go. New York however responded went on a 4-2 run down the stretch to seal the victory.
Seattle Storm 89 - Tulsa Shock 72
Sue Bird produced a season-high 29 points, seven assists, six rebounds and two steals as Seattle Storm cruised past Tulsa Shock 89-72 victory at BOK Center. It was the 12 straight defeat of the WNBA-worse Tulsa.
Swin Cash added 23 points, nine rebounds and five assists while Tanisha Wright scored 11 points in the victory. Tiffany Jackson led the Shock with 16 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Ivory Latta registered 13
points, six rebounds and four assists while Liz Cambage contributed 11 points in Tulsa’s defeat.
Bird scored 20 of her points in the first half and Storm took a 48-35 lead into the locker room. Shock held Seattle to just 14 points in the third period, cutting Storm’s lead to seven points, 62-55. However, Seattle pushed their
lead to 12 point early in the fourth quarter and Tulsa never got closer than 10 the rest of the way.
