Phoenix Mercury, San Antonio Silver Stars and Seattle Storm win - WNBA Roundup June 24, 2011
On Friday June 24, 2011, three games took place in Women National Basketball Association (WNBA). Here are the highlights of the three games:
Phoenix Mercury 92 - Atlanta Dream 83
Diana Taurasi scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Phoenix Mercury defeated Atlanta Dream 92-83 at the Philips Arena.
Candice Dupree added 19 points and six rebounds while Penny Taylor had 17 points, a game-high 10 rebounds and eight assists for Phoenix, who won their third straight.
Angel McCoughtry led Atlanta with 24 points, six boards, three steals and two assists. Lindsey Harding and Courtney Paris posted 13 points apiece for the Dream, who have lost three of their last four games. Paris also grabbed eight
boards while Iziane Castro Marques registered 12 points in the loss.
Forward Dupree scored 14 of her points in the first half as Phoenix carried a 51-43 lead at halftime. Mercury then sprinted to an 11-0 run in the last three minutes of the third quarter to widen their lead to 17 points, 74-57,
heading into the fourth.
Mercury entered the fourth quarter with a 17 point lead and were never threatened again. Dream stared at a double digit hole through most the frame and made some quick shot in the garbage time to ensure a decent final score line.
San Antonio Silver Stars 90 - Los Angeles Sparks 80
At AT&T Center, Jia Perkins came off the bench with a game best 31 points and eight rebounds as the San Antonio Silver Stars gunned down Los Angeles Sparks 90-80 in overtime.
Perkins hit 13 of 18 from the field including 4 of the 7 three-pointers. Becky Hammon added 22 points, nine assists, three rebounds and two steals in the victory. Sophia Young racked up 12 points and seven rebounds while Ruth Riley
chipped in with 11 points and nine rebounds for San Antonio.
Candace Parker scored 25 points, pulled down 13 boards and dished out four assists to lead Los Angeles. DeLisha Milton had 15 points, six rebounds and four assists while Noelle Quinn ended with 10 points, six assists, and four
rebounds for Los Angeles, who saw their three-game winning streak coming to an end.
Los Angeles scored the first eight points and last five points of the first quarter to carry a 28-17 lead into the second. The Silver Stars outplayed Sparks, 25-15, in the second quarter but Los Angeles still held on to a one-point
lead, 43-42, at the end of first half.
Sparks tightened up their back court in the second half and limited San Antonio to just 17 points in the third quarter, taking a 65-59 advantage into the fourth. They continued to lead and a Quinn three-pointer late in the fourth
gave them a 78-73 lead. However in the ensuing passage, Perkins drove to the rim and Hammon followed with a 3-pointer to knot the game at 78, sending it into overtime.
San Antonio routed the visitors 12-2 in the overtime to ensure the win.
Seattle Storm 65 - Minnesota Lynx 55
On Friday night, five Seattle Strom players scored in double figures as they knocked out Minnesota Lynx 65-55 at Key Arena.
Camille Little added 16 points and five rebounds while Swin Cash registered 13 points, nine boards and four assists to snap Minnesota’s five-game winning streak. Seimone Augustus led Lynx with game-high 17 points and six rebounds
while Amber Harris came off the bench with 11 points in the defeat.
In the first quarter, Seattle played a tight defence and limited Minnesota to just 2 of 15 shooting from the field, taking a 21-8 lead in the process. Augustus scored seven of her points early in the second quarter to trim the
margin to two points, 25-23. Storm though, went on a late 10-2 run to take a 35-25 lead at halftime.
Minnesota switched to zone defence in the third and choke Seattle’s shooting, reducing them to just 12 points. However, Storm still managed to hold on to 47-45 advantage, going into the final stanza.
Seattle broke through the Lynx defence in the fourth and scored the first seven points. They never looked back after that and romped to a win.
