Phoenix Mercury and Seattle Storm win – WNBA Roundup June 21, 2011: Part 2

Phoenix Mercury 105 - San Antonio Silver Stars 98
On Tuesday night, Penny Taylor scored a game-high 30 points and dished five assists as the Phoenix Mercury downed the San Antonio Silver Stars, 105-98, at AT&T Center. It was the first defeat for Silver Stars in this season and
snapped their four-game winning streak.
Taylor erupted with an 11 for 15 shooting from the field, 3 for 6 from downtown, and 5 for 6 from free throw line on the night. Candice Dupree added 20 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds while Kara Braxton had 15 points
and nine rebounds in the victory. Temeka Johnson posted 14 points and six assists and DeWanna Bonner grabbed 11 rebounds for Mercury.
Diana Taurasi’s performance in this game was not up to the mark as she ended with just seven points, which is 16 points less than her league-leading average that is 23 points per game.
Becky Hammon led San Antonio with 28 points, seven assists, and four rebounds. Hammon pinned 5 of the 9 three-pointers and hit a perfect 5 for 5 from free throw line.
Danielle Adams came off the bench with 22 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks; Jia Perkins and contributed 15 points and four rebounds and Jayne Appel grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds in the defeat.
Phoenix starting five headed out aggressively and romped to a 14-4 run in the preliminary four minutes of the first quarter. However, Washington struck back efficiently and tied the game at 23-23 at the end of the opening period.
Mercury outplayed the Silver Stars 29-20 in the second quarter, taking a 52-43 lead at halftime. Phoenix continued to play tear apart the Storm back court and took an 81-70 lead into the fourth.
San Antonio fought back in the fourth quarter and trimmed the deficit to seven, 99-92, with 55 seconds to go in the game. However, Phoenix were never threatened and they hung tough in the final stretch to seal the win.
Seattle Storm 82 - Tulsa Shock 77
Sue Bird matched a game high 21 points and dished out six assists as the defending champion Seattle Storm squeaked past Tulsa Shock 82-77 at the BOK Center.
Swin Cash scored 17 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and dished four assists for Seattle, who lost its previous game to Los Angeles Sparks 74-50 on Sunday night. Camille Little had 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two
steals while Lecoe Willingham posted 10 points and four rebounds for Storm. Seattle forward centre and the three-time MVP Lauren Jackson left the game late in the second quarter with a hip injury and did not return in the second half of the game. She added
four points before she left.
Tiffany Jackson led Tulsa with 20 points, shooting a perfect 12 for 12 from free throw line. She also grabbed 10 rebounds and two steals.
Kayla Pedersen registered 15 points, four assists, and four rebounds for Shock, who are now eighth in the Western Conference with six defeats in the previous seven games of this season. Centre Liz Cambage came off the bench with
13 points and six rebounds, while Ivory Latta finished with 11 points in the defeat.
