Phoenix Mercury’s DeWanna Bonner named WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week
Phoenix Mercury’s DeWanna Bonner has been recognized by the WNBA as the Western Conference player of the week for her stellar performances during the games played from August 29 through September 4. The 24-year-old guard helped
Mercury beat the Tulsa Shock and Los Angeles Sparks in the successful six-day stretch.
For the week, the league’s Sixth Woman of the Year in 2009 and 2010, averaged 19 points and 9.3 rebounds. The 6 ft 4 in player is the fourth Phoenix player to have earned the Player of the Week honours so far, which very much explains
why Mercury first have been the team to beat this season.
The Fairfield High School’s product is averaging 10.7 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.0 block per game so far in this season, which is only her second. During the week, she was ranked fifth in the West in three-point shooting percentage
on 8-for-18 from behind the arc and sixth in both field goal percentage (19 for 37 from the field) and free throws (11 for 12 from the line).
In the Eastern Conference, Connecticut Sun’s Tina Charles was named Player of the Week after averaging a conference-high 12.7 rebounds and the WNBA-best 2.67 blocks per game on the week.
Here is a brief review of the brilliant performance of Bonner during the last week:
August 30 vs. Tulsa Shock
Bonner’s signature effort of the week came this past Tuesday night in Phoenix’s 96-74 win over slumping Shock at BOK Center, Snapping Tulsa’s two-game winning streak, Bonner tied her career-high with 25 points, including 21 of
them in the first half of the game.
Commenting on her brilliant performance, one game after being held scoreless in win over Washington Mystics,
"I came out a little more focused," "I was looking for my shot, being a little more aggressive. I guess it worked out."
Bonner was 8 of 12 from the field on the night, including 4 for 6 from downtown and 5 for 6 from free throw line.
September 1 vs. San Antonio Silver Stars
One day after her career-high performance, Bonner erupted with a game-high 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds in an 86-68 loss to San Antonio Silver Stars at AT&T Center. She went 7 for 15 from the floor, hitting 3 of 7 three-pointers,
and a perfect 6 for 6 from the line.
