Phoenix Suns - Underdogs ready to surprise in the 2012-13 NBA season - Opinion (Part 2)
Phoenix Suns
Steve Nash might have moved on, but the moves that the Phoenix Suns front office pulled off during the summer has certainly put the team in the list of dark horses for the 2012-13 NBA season.
The Suns have been a borderline playoff team for the last three to four years and they had to inject some new blood and fresh faces to stabilize their future. One of the faces they identified was that of Michael Beasley.
A perennial underachiever to say the least, Beasley has the talent to be an All-Star only if he puts his mind to the game. The fourth year forward was drafted by the Miami Heat as the number two pick back in 2008, but such has
been his reputation over the years, that his second franchise, Minnesota Timberwolves showed no interest in retaining him this off season.
If rumours are to be believed, there weren’t many other teams interested either. The Suns however have made the gamble and it may just prove to be spectacular, because one, Beasley is desperate to prove his worth and secondly,
he has been give a free hand to shoot by Alvin Gentry, the Suns coach.
Beasley however is just the tip of the iceberg.
The Suns have also brought back their old point guard and a three year Steve Nash protégé Goran Dragic. The Lithuanian point guard was traded to the Houston Rockets last season and got the big break when Kyle Lowry got injured.
Dragic took over the team late in the season and his trade was probably one of the biggest surprises of the off-season. He was however not the only strange exclusion by the Rockets. Luis Scola was also amnestied and once again the Suns became the beneficiaries
– albeit through the waivers.
Scola is arguably one of the top five power forwards in the league today. His rebounding skills along with the low post credentials and the jumpers will add a new dimension to the Suns front court. Phoenix have also added Jermaine
O’ Neal in the lineup and the experience of both Scola and O’Neal can greatly benefit Markieff Morris and rookie centre Luke Zeller.
