Phoenix Suns eying Boston Celtics wingman Ray Allen - NBA Report
Phoenix Suns talisman Steve Nash, at the twilight of his career, has made it clear that he wants to be a part of a championship calibre team, and for that he has shown his clear inclination towards the reigning NBA champions Miami
Heat and the New York Knicks.
The Suns however are still hoping against hope and in an effort to entice Nash to stay, they are musing upon the possibility of roping in Ray Allen, the 37 year old Boston Celtics veteran shooting guard.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo sports;
“The Suns have surfaced as serious contenders to sign Boston Celtics free agent Ray Allen. The Suns have significant salary-cap space, and could pay Allen more than the Miami Heat or New York Knicks. Suns president Lon Babby had
been Allen’s agent for a significant part of his career until Babby started running Phoenix’s basketball operations two years ago”.
Allen is a gifted wingman and coming into Phoenix he can make an immediate impact. However last season, he struggled through multiple injuries and managed to average just 14.2 points to go with 3.1 boards in 46 games. This was
a career low since his rookie season and even in the playoffs, Ray was only a shadow of himself.
The dip in performances however was majorly due to the ankle injury. The injury restricted his ability to move freely and the best perimeter shooter of all times struggled to make even free throws.
Deep into the regular season, he was replaced in the starting lineup by Avery Bradley, which was the first time in his career that he played a game as a substitute. Then after Bradley was ruled out of the season due to a shoulder
injury, Allen had to fill in the spot.
He struggled to make an impact in the first and second round of playoffs against the Atlanta Hawks and the Philadelphia 76ers, but got going on the offensive end in the Conference Finals against Miami Heat. That however was not
enough as the hurt ankle stopped him from defending aggressively.
The guard went through a surgery immediately after the Miami series and is now slated to be a part of the Miami Heat. Phoenix however have thrown in their name among the suitors and it would be interesting to see what course of
action the veteran swingman eventually takes.
