Phoenix Suns upset San Antonio Spurs, 106-103 at US Airways Center
The San Antonio Spurs did not see that coming, not at this point of time, not when they were tied with the Bulls, at the first seed in the league.
But the Phoenix Suns surprised, rather shocked them by taking out a fourth quarter assault and driving them out with a 106-103 defeat at the US Airways Center, on April 13, 2011.
After this defeat the Spurs have now lost home court advantage that would go to the Chicago Bulls, who beat the New Jersey Nets at home, the same night.
Marcin Gortat pinned a game high 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds leading the Suns to victory. Channing Frye clinched 17 points and was just one board shy of a double-double.
The player went 3 for 10 from the long range whereas Jared Dudley was in superb form, going for 17 points, while grabbing eight rebounds in the win.
Vince Carter had a strong hold on the game and dished out 10 assists and finished with eight points in 30 plus minutes off the Suns bench.
Even with the Spurs’ starters back in action after being benched in the game against Los Angeles Lakers, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and, Tony Parker, could not cross the 20 point mark and the highest they could score was 17, clinched by Duncan.
The player also grabbed 12 rebounds in the loss.
One of the Spurs top scorers, Ginobili, was injured and had to leave the game with 9:46 remaining in the first quarter. This definitely spells "DANGER" to the Spurs, who lost an opportunity to take away home court advantage as well as the number one spot
in the league.
Gary Neal contributed 14 points and also made a steal in the defeat. Grant Hill and Danny Green posted 13 points off the bench each.
The Phoenix Suns met the challenging Spurs with excellent shooting in the very first quarter of the game. They were dominating the Spurs by 17 points in the very first quarter and never let San Antonio minimise the lead.
Phoenix shot a splendid 65 percent in the opening 12 minutes of the game, notching 17 of 26 shots and was leading the Spurs by as many as eight points before the intermission, 61-53.
The Spurs fought back in the final minutes, posting 12 free throws down the stretch bringing it as close as 103-104, at the 4.4 mark of the final quarter. Aaron Brooks came forward to knock down two free throws to leap ahead 106-103, with only 3.9 seconds
in hand.
San Antonio’s Neal, who was fouled by Suns’ Brooks, came forward to attempt a three-pointer that he unfortunately missed.
The Suns (40-42) stood victorious, whereas the Spurs (61-21) lost, 106-103.
