Question:

Phone Line repair. What am I doing wrong???

I was trying to re-route my phone line and the only way to do it was to cut it. When I tried to put the lines back together, the line no longer worked. I twisted the phone lines together and then used a marette to hold it together but it doesn't seem to be working. The line I cut is the main line coming from the box of the phone company but it's inside my house. I thought it would be as easy as maretting them to join them again but I'm not getting anywhere with that. Any suggestions???

  1. You may have a loose connection , try using small wire nuts, Or you have crossed the wires, try switching the wires and connecting them with wire nuts.

  2. Go to Home Depot or Lowes and get some phone wire and rerun your line.  If any of the wires touch, that's it, it won't work.  I guess if you can't or don't want to fish through the walls, that wouldn't be a good answer.  Only alternative is to call the phone company and pay up.

  3. Is it possible that you used one only marette?  There are at least two wires (usually red and black), sometimes four (usually the others are black and yellow).  Wires should be spliced color to color (like red to red).  No different colors should touch.

Make sure you strip off some insulation on each wire, so the copper shows.  Maybe for about a half inch.
