Hi; my wife and I are coming to the Republic of Ireland this August from the USA and I'm planning on buying a phone card to use in the public phones[ to call our B&B's to let them know when to expect us]. I'm wondering how prevalent phone boxes are around the country.....ie. Cashel, Tralee, Athlone.

  1. Bring your mobile all the phone boxes are vandalised.

Visit Northern, the prices are much cheaper.

  2. Well, I would bring a mobile phone, renting one would probably be better than bringing your own because of the roaming charges. Theres only like 2 phone boxes in the town I live in.(but theres way more in cities, they're all over the place!). But if you want to use the phone boxes, use the eircom ones, the others are just a rip off.

    Enjoy your stay!

  3. hi you

there are a lot of public phone and/or phone box's all around the place but stick to the eircom more over seen your getting a call card the non eircom public phone are a rip off

  4. Yes, and we also have electricity and running water as well.

They are everywhere, you can buy the 'Phone cards' from Post offices, and most supermarkets and newsagents,

Sorry if I sounded sarcastic, but so many people from abroad still think we still live in the dark ages.

  5. They are good few of them around,I'm sure you'll find one.

There is lots in my town.

  6. We don't have many phoneboxes but we have pay phones attached to the walls in pubs, hotels, shopping centres etc.

They're the same idea but are harder to find because you have to go into different places!

  7. bring your mobile phone. it's much simpler as telephone boxes aren't as common as once were.

  8. Hi,

I'm from the USA and have been living in Ireland for a 8 months.  The phone boxes are around in the major cities but I was just in Tralee last week and don't recall seeing any there...and the ones that you do see can be pretty nasty.  My advice would be to rent a mobile phone while you're here (you can pick it up at the airport).  It's much easier to manage and probably ends up costing about the same.  My friend did this last week when she was here and it worked out very well.  I can check with her and find out which company she used to rent the phone if you're interested.

  9. I find the number of phone boxes have dwindeled since about 10 years ago. You will find them various places, but I wouldnt rely on it. I'd say bring a mobile with you, or even if you have one but dont want to be paying rediculous roaming charges, before you leave get your phone unlocked and buy a sim card over here (so much cheaper), I suggest buying a meteor sim as its great value for money.

  10. I don't live in Ireland. I live in the US

  11. theres a lot of them lol hundreds especially in the city although you may have problems finding one in the suburbs
