Question:

Phone interview etiquette - what do you think of this?

I had an appointment for a phone interview - job overseas. ( I had offered to phone the prospective employer to keep costs down their end but was told they'd ph me.) The appointed hour came and went. I waited 1.5 hours then phoned them to be told the person who was supposed to phone me was on annual leave for the day! If you know the amount of time, effort and anguish that goes into preparing for an interview these days, you'd understand my distress. Any comments?

  1. There is no doubt you are better off without that particular job. Even if that person who was to phone you was on leave, it would be common courtesy to call and fix an alternative date. If this is how their HR departnet operates, it is a poor reflection of how the company would treat employees.

  2. Please beware...

There are scammers out there who are preying on your employment needs.

They send you email job offer from overseas. You fill out their application or send them your resume giving them your personal information. They tell you to wait for an interview. The interview never happens. They steal your identity.

I'd be weary of any job offer that is too good to be true.

You should always do research on any company you are applying for.

You need a job, but you don't need your reputation and identity ruined.

Please beware and hopefully the company you applied to is legit.

    Best Wishes.

  3. I'm sure everyone understands your frustration and sympathises, but there's no real answer to this.

The unreliability may be typical of the whole organisation, in which case you're better off seeking employment elsewhere.

    Look on the bright side!

And yes, be on the lookout for potential scams such as identity theft. Always try to do some research on companies that offer jobs online before supplying personal details.
