I want to get a phone in my room. But my parents won't pay for another line, or pay for a phone jack to be installed in my room. How can I hook up my phone? I have a wireless router, can you hook a phone line up to that? I really have no clue. Also how do those plug things work, the ones that convert an outlet into a phone jack. Please help me

  1. Check to see where the Network Interface Device (NID) which is usually installed beside the power meter is. Get some telco wire and a jack from walmart. Open up the customer side of the NID and you will see that everything is color-coded. Very easy and legal to install yourself.

  2. Try Vonage some other voip(voice over internet protocol) service, never had much luck with those plug-in to outlet phone jacks. Most Low voltage companies charge less than the local phone company to install a phone jack, my dad's company in Chicago-land only charges $60 to install a new phone jack

  3. If you can find a phone jack in a nearby room just follow this quick and dirty recipe to install a phone jack. This installation is easily reversible and simply plugs in.

    Parts and tools needed:

-Phone Jack Splitter (that way your jack and a phone can be plugged in at the same time)

-Long phone cord (you will be cutting one end off)

    -Phone jack

-Screwdriver (to connect the wires to the jack)

-Wire cutters and strippers (to cut the plug off and to strip the wire).

Here is what you need to do:

    1. Obtain all of the tools and supplies above.

    2. Find the end that has the wires in the order of Yellow, Green, Red, Black and cut it off.

    3. Strip the cable Jacket away from the wires

    4. Open the jack and locate the terminals

    5. Strip the wires and connect them to the proper places on the jack.

    6. Close the jack.

    7. Run the wire to the nearest working jack.

    8. Unplug the phone in the jack plug in the splitter, the original phone, then your cable.

    9. Plug a phone into your jack and check for dial tone.

    10. If you get a dial tone you are done.

  4. instead of getting a phone, try Skype, its free and you can call people all over the world

  5. Skype is not free.!! Only to other computers,. If you want to call landline phones, it costs.!!
