Phone jacks?

i just plugged a phone in to a jack and it doesnt go to my regular number it has another phone line, will i have to pay a lot of extra money to use this other phone line as well as the other one? and also if i unplug it from the jack and just plug it in the wall will it go to my regular old number?

  1. the phone does not care what line it is connected too, but if you are on a neighbors line, and you knowingly make telephone calls on that line, the phone company considers this to be Theft Of Service.


  2. The telephone (instrument) does not know its phone number.

    It gets it from the wall jack and that is wired to the telephone company's lines and then to the telephone company's central office where the number is supplied.

    Only the telephone company can change the telephone number to that jack. If you plug it in to a different jack it may or may not get a different number it all depends on how the jacks are wired to the telephone company lines.

    Normally the telephone company charges per number assigned to a home/apartment.   It is very possible to have two different telephone numbers within one home/apartment.
