I got not dial tone this morning, but calling home number gives me a busy signal. Same thing happened yesterday, but resolved itself. Unplugged EVERYTHING attached to phone lines, then went out to eat. Upon returning, plugged in a corded phone. Same thing. DSL works, but still not the phone line. Any ideas?

  1. Remember, all phones plugged in MUST have a 'filter' supplied if you have DSL. Only the DSL connection does NOT need a plug in filter. Without the filters on EVERY working phone, you will have problems.

  2. Youve got a short in an inside wire somewhere...dsl will still work because dsl only needs one path of resistance to travel..it will work over the worst of lines..except for a complete cut of line outside.. if umplugging didnt work..usually you have either corrosion in the box outside..open it up and unplug the plug that looks like a telephone jack..plug a phone into it..and see if you have dialtone...

if you have a maintance plan..call the telephone company..it will not cost you anything..

  3. Do you have a spiltter in you home ?

if yes ......... check with the spiltter because most of the cases it would be a problem with the spiltter.

if no............ do you have a multi jack connected ,check the jack.

  4. Bingo!  You said it in your last line of your comment.... it's the Security System.

You say it can't be disconnected?  Well, then how did you get a DSL filter in line with it?  You didn't?  Well, then that's the problem!

The security system has to have a disconnect jack, just like other telephones in the house.  Go to the security system utility box. Find it's jack and disconnect it and see if that solves the problem.   You need a DSL filter in line with security phone line too.

  5. As stated if you disconnect everything and dialtone comes back, then one of your devices probably has an issue.  If you have a cordless phone in the house, make sure you not only unplug it from the phone jack, but also unplug the power cord as well.  Sometimes the base unit needs to reset, because it doesn't detect when you hang up the phone.  If there's no dial tone and theres no noise, its probably a short, if you hear a buzz or hum on the line, its probably a ground.  Also, the security system should have a test jack that can be unplugged that will disconnect it from your phone system temporarily to see if its cause the short.  It should be located in or around the panel the alarm company put in one of your closets.

  6. It sounds like  a short circuit or hard ground on your line, it could be a defective phone or other device that use the phone line like answering machines, alarm systems, caller ids, fax machines, etc. it could be the wiring in your house or outside. The easiest thing to do is unplug all your phones, caller id, fax machine from the phone jacks, including the phone cords, and then call your number, if you don't get the busy tone anymore, then it is one of the things that u unplugged that is causing the problem, try plugging them one at a time until u lose dial tone again , the one that u connected last before losing dial tone is the defective one. Good luck. u can also visit the site below for more information about the topic.
