I am working in a school and need to assess how childrens language develops. What do people think about the use of phonetics to help develop childrens language ability?

  1. Phonetics is how a child can learn to write words without having to read yet. Once they know the phonemes, they can begin sounding out words in their head when they are usually about 4 years old and can write any word they want phonetically. After much practice with this, children then become so confident in the phonetics, they begin to read words on their own by 4.5.

As far as non-phonetic words, once children are about 5, they begin to memorize many things. Words that cannot be sounded out phonetically can be used with children in memorization type of games, and the children pick up on them very quickly. The important part is that they have had a good, strong foundation built in phonetics. The five year olds in my classroom are able to read phonetic and non-phonetic words extremely easily and have been doing so ahead of their typical kindergarten peers.

  3. Phonetics is a great starting point for reading readiness and for pronunciation as well, but as we all know, in the English language phonics can only goes so far. In my classroom, I do mostly phonics, but also some word recognition as well...for example with poetry...kids may get a bit confused with a word like "Autumn" if they only know basic phonics rules, so I try to give them exposure to such words and try to teach them to encode and decode more difficult words.

  4. Phonemic awareness is directly linked to reading success.
