Question:

Phonics Plus Five?/Ordinary Parent's Guide Reading?

I just read the book Phonics Plus Five, and I'm not really sure how I feel about it. There are no reviews about it that I can find, and I wanted to know if anyone out there had used it? My daughter absolutely LOATHES the Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, so I am looking for another way. I saw another book called The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading, but they didn't have it at the library, so I haven't read it yet. If anyone knows of any system/program other than the 100 Lessons, book, let me know! Oh, my daughter is almost four, knows all her upper and lowercase letters by sight and can write them all, and knows all the sounds they make. She really wants to read and I want to make sure that I teach her in the best way possible. I read to her for at least an hour a day every day. I really don't think I should have to spend $200 for Hooked on Phonics. Help!

  1. Hi.

You can find out a lot more if you go to the website

    http://phonicsplusfive.com/

    There are many parent testimonials

The site has samples and a test you can give your child to see if the program is right for them

You can read reviews of the book "The Reading Remedy" at Amazon

The program is unique in that it teaches all the skills required for reading - not just sounding out.

I have personally used the program to help a child who was failing in school learn how to read and the results are excellent - but keep in mind that you do have to spend 15-20 minutes 4-5 days per week. But when your kid becomes a fluent reader, it's worth every minute.

  2. I have purchased and used Phonics Plus Five for my 10 year old son.  He has always struggled with his reading and I have been searching for a "program" for years.  I have read several books, tried several different approaches but not until doing Phonics Plus Five do I feel we moved forward in the correct fashion.

Because he is older we did not start at the beginning of the program.  However, I have read Dr. Blank's book READING REMEDY and I agree with the theories presented regarding the penmanship, etc.

I would strongly recommend the program.  Good luck.

  3. Hi. Phonics Plus Five works. My daughter is autistic, and it worked for her. Our therapist used it for her own son (who is perfectly normal and mainstream) and was stunned when her 2 1/2 year old began to read - with comprehension. She also used it for my friend's son (age 5) who she used to see for speech delay, but is in kindergarten at a prestigious Manhattan private school and now reading ahead of his peers. Probably no reviews, because Dr. Blank is willing to step outside the box of conventional teaching.-Arlene
