Question:

Photo ID cards for middle school kids?

Question more for the progressive/conspiracy-minded folks (like me.) : Is this a good idea? They want my 8th grade daughter to have one. I feel a bit concerned - like that military recruitment program in the high schools. Can I or she "opt-out," as they say, of it?

Please, no spamming from war-mongering types.

  1. I got one in College 15 years ago. I don't think that is a problem.

I like how military recruitment concerns you, but g*y/socialist indoctrination in schools doesn't.

  2. First I am a liberal/progressive and somewhat a conspiracy thinker too.  Second, I am a teacher.  Now for an answer: having kids wear at school their ID is a good idea as it designates who belongs and who doesn't.  I am in favor of wearing ID's at school so that EVERYONE knows who belongs and who doesn't.  Also, it can help by giving all the teachers a way to specifically ID a kid in dealing with discipline issues.

I am in agreement with you in being against the military recruitment part of NCLB, but I am against NCLB in totality as it is a full-frontal assault on public education with the goal of privatizing public education so the business can get its hands on the $800 billion spent on public schools.

  3. I can totally understand your point but I work in the public school system and I can tell you that it is for security purposes. No matter how hard you try to protect children schools are not 100 percent  criminal proof. If a molestor or kidnapper wants to get in bad enough they will. It's hard to know who's supposed to be in school and who's not..with sub teachers and sub lunch room workers/sub janitors and regular staff and teachers and office workers.. it's tough anymore to keep up with who is actually on official business to be on grounds. Especially if the school is big..you can't.. When I was in HS, it was rare to see a teacher under 40..now a days, I work with HS teachers that are 22 or 23 and it's hard to know if they are teachers or students or parents or sisters or brothers, etc. It's tough to explain but believe me when I tell you that as a school employee, it makes feel safer when i can look at a name badge and know that person is supposed to be there and I don't have to worry about if they are trespassing or a molester or kidnapper.. It's sad that it's come to that but it has and it is a safety measure

  4. there is no federal requirement for anyone to have or carry any ID.  The schools are promoting this as a 'security' issue.   You should contact either the school principal or the school board and discuss ( decline ) this.

  5. It's normal. She might as well get used to it now because thats the way it is in highschool. I personally dont see the point in these IDs but its a school rule.

  6. They had photo ID cards when I was in middle school, 10 years ago. This is nothing new... It is simply a security measure they are taking. Quit being the mom who wants to be different and suck it up, it is for your child's own good.
