Photo shop help, please? Text isn't working.?

I did what my friend told me and reset the preferences but nothing happened, and there's a weird symbol in the middle of the text box and i don't remember seeing it before. Everytime I type for the text, it just comes out the layer's new name. Help?

Automatically, the txt you type in will be the name of the layer.  There are several different things that could be wrong-- here's a few common ones.

Layer order- You need it on top.

Text Color- You need it to stand out.

Transparency/Opacity- All should be around 100%, in the text and in the txt layer.

Not available- If you try to do it in a locked layer or a locked image, it won't work.
