  1. What are the subject you are most competent shooting?

If sports, show up at sporting events and shoot like a maniac.

If editorial, shoot at all the press conferences and other new worthy events where you don't need a press pass.

If you are a student, join NPPA and ASMP as a student member and network with pros.

  2. I started by offering free photo sessions, just so I could build my portfolio. They only pay for any prints they want.

But to get people, I posted fliers in company breakrooms, the library, grocery stores, etc.

I also submit pictures to contests. Just today I got an email that said they wanted to put a picture I submitted into their newspaper. Of course I don't get an award or anything but I do get new exposure.

    Good luck.

  3. There is nothing more than "joedlh" and the other members have said.

And make pictures just for your sake:))

  4. by going to work and doing my job.

  5. Not that I'm a world-renowned photographer, but I've gotten noticed by:

Volunteering for a marine animal rescue program and taking photos for them. I've gotten newspaper pubs and display photos in a local aquarium.

Enter contests. It's tough to win, but when you do, it gives you some cred.

Develop your own web page. Get business cards made up with the url. Hand them out to whoever asks about your work.

Talk to the editor/publisher of a local community newspaper. They might have work for you that will not pay well, if at all, but might get you noticed.

Go to concerts for local bands who can't afford professional photographs. Give them some free shots.

Get a day time job that pays the bills while you pursue your dream. It's not going to happen overnight.
