  1. for a beginner i would suggest a kodak with printer dock. i've been a pro photog in the past but for great everyday pictures  that you can print right then, thats my choice.

  2. I would go for Nikon D40X or D60.  As a student, you will still have Manual control and they take really good pictures for the money. Try to spend more money on your lenses if you can, most of the image color and contrast comes from the quality of the lens.

  3. A Canon XTi or Canon XSi is my vote from the Canon line.  The XSi does spot metering which is really important to me--and sensor cleaning and a few more megapixels.

I'd make a list on what's important to you and what kind of photography are you going to do--then go with a line that best fits those needs.  Canon does really nice action shots, I've been told Nikon wins hands down for portraiture--it's personal preference.  There are some good deals to be had on used cameras since lots of Canon people are upgrading to the 40D--just be careful who you buy a used camera from.

For my purse, I have a Sony point and shoot and I love it as much as my Canon 40D--they both fit my needs in a different situation.

  4. I just bought my first DSLR about a month ago - I'm in high school.

I bought a Nikon D40 on eBay for $385 (free shipping). It was refurbished, but you would never know it. It looked brand new and came with a 18-55mm lens. The eBay seller was barclaysphoto, if you are interested.

    It's a great camera!

  5. I would recommend the D40 or D60 they are good entry level DSLR that will allow you to do more as you grow in skill. you can read review of them at places like ken rockwels site or DPreview.com

Edit I don't think kodak makes an SLR
