Question:

Photojournalism degree at Boston University?

I want to pursue photojournalism as my major in college, but I'm not entirely sure which college would be the best choice.

Boston is my number one choice because of its prestige and surroundings. It makes sense to be a photojournalism major in a bustling city on the East Coast. Internships at major news organizations will be close by. My only setback is the cost. BU costs more than $35,000 a year. When I graduate from college, I'll be drowning in debt and photojournalists rarely make more than 20K a year!

Would it make more sense to go to a cheaper school? Besides BU, I'm looking at Kent State and Western Kentucky (I live in Cincinnati).

It just seems like the chances of gaining access to a good career in photojournalism would be greatest at BU. My dream is to become a photographer for the Associated Press, although I realize that photojournalism is an EXTREMELY competitive field.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  1. I'd recommend to go to Kent State which I've heard has a decent Journalism program. I wouldn't recommend Western Kentucky as its known more for its other programs.

  2. If you have to pay full freight, I think you should go to a state school and do extremely well there and try to get some solid internships under your belt.  It is not worth going into severe debt to then work in a low paying field.
