  1. (1) Get yourself a couple of books that will teach you the basics of how the program works, such as Photoshop CS2 for Dummies and/or the Photoshop CS2 Visual Quickstart guide.

    (2) Google tutorials for Photoshop, such as "retouching".

You have to understand that the way Photoshop works is through a combination of tools, layers, masks and filters, plus your skills and understanding of when and why to use certain things. There are NO "click this and retouch the image" buttons or tools. It is a process with several steps. There is nothing that works with one step, in an instant, or like magic. You have to be willing to take the time to learn how things work, and to experiment. Photoshop is very complex. It is not meant for people who want the instant fix. Even people who are masters at using Photoshop will tell you that it is complex enough that no one can learn everything about it. But this doesn't mean you can't become good at using it, if you are willing to take the time to actually learn things.

Here are a few important basics: when you open an image to edit it in Photoshop, the first thing you should do is go to File>Save As. When the dialog box comes up, rename your image (to something easy to remember plus something indicate this is your working copy), select Photoshop from the drop down file-type menu, select a location where you want to save the file (you may want to create a folder for images you are editing), and hit save. You are now editing a COPY of your original image. And you are editing it as a native Photoshop file, which means (1) you should have access to everything you need in Photoshop and (2) you won't be messing up your original image.

Now also go to Image>Mode and make sure RGB is selected (has a check mark by it).

Third thing: keep your Layers palette open. If it's not open, go to Window>Layers (you will see a check mark if it's open). Layers are your friend. You will do a lot with layers, which are like a stack of sheets of transparent or translucent paper. You can copy a layer, you can create a new empty layer, you can move the layer order around just by dragging layers in the palette. You can apply effects to layers, you can change how one layer affects another layer. So you want to use them.

Hope this helps. There is so much you can do with Photoshop, but you have to take the time to learn how it works, it is not something you can just do in 5 minutes.

  2. You can draw, color, paint, manipulate photos, you can even imitate painting, add flair to your photos or drawings. You can do absolutely anything with it!
