Photoshop replacing colours?

ok so when i use the pencil tool to draw a line in a colour if i drag the pencil back over that line instead of continuing with an identical colour it makes it darker....it has only just started doing this. how do i stop it?

That's because your pencil tool has a lower opacity than 100%.  Basically what is happening is that when you have an opac of like 30%.  When you first color the line it will be drawing whatever you choose and only putting down 30% of the color.  Now, when you go back over the line it will get darker because it's taking the 30% that you already have down on the paper and putting another 30% on it.

    What I would do is either A.) Change the opacity setting at the top to 100%.  B.) Erase the line and be careful where you start and stop.  Zoom all the way in if you have to.
