    What energetic function are plants performing when they photosynthesize? What pigment molecule do they use to perform photosynthesis?

    Photosynthesis makes sugars and the by-product oxygen from Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Water (H2O), using the energy of sunlight, trapped by chlorophyll. Occurs in chloroplasts - chloroplast is green in pigmentation. It is large bodies containing chlorophyll which is green. The Chlorophyll converts sunlight energy into chemical energy (ATP).

    ATP is used to combine Carbon Dioxide (CO2) with Water H2O making glucose - which stores the energy in its bonds.

    The simplest equation for photosynthesis is:

    6CO2 + 6H2O --- sunlight energy + chlorophyll -----> C6H12O6 + 6O2

    6Carbon Dioxide  + 6Water ---sunlight energy + chlorophyll ---------> Glucose (energy rich) + Oxygen.

  3. They are capturing solar energy and converting it to energy in chemical bonds.
