My name is Andrew Loethscher. I'm 18 and am starting college soon for pre-med. I recently broke my neck, leaving me paralyzed for some time. I'm much better now and my journey has pointed me towards physiatry as my specialty. What is the work and pay like compared to other specialties?

  1. Physiatry (Fizz – eye – a –tree) is a medical specialty focusing in the areas of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Medicine.

A Physiatrist (Fizz- eye – a –trist) is a specialist, who provides patient-centred care to individuals with any temporary or permanent loss of function. The ultimate goal of the integrated care offered is to restore or maximize functional ability and improve quality of life. There are a wide range of patients that a Physiatrist might care for. Any person with injury, illness or pain affecting the musculoskeletal, neurological or cardiorespiratory function could benefit from the expertise of a Physiatrist.

In Canada, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (RCPSC) accredits the postgraduate education programs for Physiatrists. The program consists of 5 years of specialty education, concluding with successful achievement on the certifying examination. As a RCPSC specialist, all Physiatrists must participate in the RCPSC Maintenance of Certification program.

  2. Physiatry, also known as physical medicine and rehabilitation, is a rapidly expanding specialty. Physiatrists work with orthopedic surgeons, neurological surgeons, neurologists, rheumatologists and several other specialists. They also work closely with physical therapists and occupational therapists. My personal contact was most frequent when I was allied to a pediatric rheumatology clinic, but also with some of my patients who had cerebral palsy.

A physiatrist's hours are more controllable than other physicians, as there are few emergencies and night call. The pay is quite variable, but probably slightly below average for most. Good luck in achieving your goals.
