Physiatrists?

What do they do and what are the advantages and disadvantages of this profession? What kind of environment do they work in? How many years of education are required to become one?

Well it sounds like someone is doing a career research project.

Psychiatrists are like psychologists, except for the fact that you can actually prescribe medicine. Your job would be to have people come and and you would give them advice, and psychological therapy, sometimes even prescribing medicine. You would work in an environment similar to a doctors office, or possibly a psych ward at a hospital. It takes around 8 years, since you do end up with a Ph.D

They're all quacks, they make up reasons you are the way you are so you can feel bad about yourself and then pay them to tell you it's not that bad. Watch the movie Running With Scissors, it will give you some insight. Freud and Kinsley were both sexual predators and are revered as being among  the top of their profession, what does that tell you?

psychiatrists-- are specialized medical doctors that have gone through medical school (about 6 years, including undergrad) plus 2 years of residency, plus 2 or more years specializing as fellows

psychologists-- 4 year degree in psychology (NOT A DOCTOR)

Wow... all of these answers so far have really been way off.  They seem to be talking about psychiatrists, rather than physiatrists.

A physiatrist is basically a physician who deals with rehabilitation.  They have gone through undergrad and 4 years of medical school, plus a residency program, just like any other physician.  They are usually involved in pain management, and deal with muscle, bone, and nerve injuries.

All of the physiatrists I know work in hospital rehab units, although I suppose they could be part of an ortho or physical therapy clinic.  On average, they make far less money than physicians in other medical specialites.
