David Rutter continued his interview on the upcoming game in EA Sports football simulation series by pointing out a number of game changing features set to be introduced in FIFA 13.
FIFA 10 and 11 knocked Pro Evolution Soccer off its perch, but it was FIFA 12 that truly made the title of best football simulation game its own. However, rather than resting on their laurels it seems that the development team has been busy criticising themselves and moving forward, rather than just reflecting on what an admirable job they did with their previous release.
FIFA 12 was received positively by critics and gamers alike, in fact, positively is a bit of an understatement as many fans and review sites termed the game as the best football simulation title ever.
The game introduced the Impact Engine, which removed the reliance on animations, as was the case in previous FIFA games, as well as adding skill to defending with the new Tactical Defending feature.
However, this time around EA Sports are looking to add two new major features to the game one of which could have the same profound effect as Tactical Defending did in the previous game.
David Rutter, the man behind the development of the FIFA series, explained how this year’s new feature “revolves around the Impact Engine itself.”
He explained that, “Last year it made collisions on the ball look nice with lots of really pretty animations, near-limitless variety of outcomes and smoothed the entire gameplay engine so everything felt consistent.” However, “This year we have the ability for defenders to muscle in front of attackers, to put their body in the way and prevent attackers progressing with the ball.”
Elaborating on that particular point Rutter went on to add that this time around gamers would find that “There are true push and pull game mechanics; before the attacker has got the ball or when he's got the ball you can put him off.”
Whether or not the improvement is significant enough to catch the gamer’s attention and hold it is something everyone will have to wait and see, however, one can assume that if it fixes the kinks and glitches of FIFA 12’s Impact Engine no one will complain.
