You have probably often traveled in a car that went faster and faster. We say the car is accelerating. Therefore, a good way to think of acceleration is the direction a car travels and _______.

the increasing rate of speed

the amount the car weighs

the friction from the ground

none of the above

  1. If this are the only options... I believe an ok answer will be "none of the above"... Don't forget the acceleration is pretty much just a scalar but not a direction. It only tells you how much you are acceleration by but never where you are going. The only thing that has a direction is a vector which corresponds to the velocity. Also, if the acceleration is at a constant rate then you will have a horizontal line in a (x,y) plane. Then in such case you velocity will be a linear function with a positive slope. So in fact there is an increase of speed at a constant rate but not at an increasing rate! B and C answers are out of the question!

        *  Speed is the rate of change of distance with time.

        * Velocity is the rate of change of displacement with time.

  2. Those are all pretty poor answers but they're looking for "the increasing rate of speed".

  3. none of the above... a good way to think about acceleration is a change in velocity in a given direction
