2: How do you make sounds from your vocal chords?

Vocal chords act like tiny loudspeakers, vibrating and forcing sound out your mouth

Air from your lungs passes over the vibrating vocal chords, making sound

It is a myth that your sound comes from vocal chords; it comes from your chest

3: What happens when you blow across the top of a bottle?

The top of the bottle gets cold, making a squeaking sound

Air starts to circulate and vibrate in the bottle, making a sound

You must blow into the bottle for anything to happen

  1. So, what is your question.

#1 is FALSE.  Consider a string instrument say a guitar.  Does the sound come from the strings or the body?

  2. 2..The AIR only is coming from the chest (lungs) and as it passes over the vocal chords it picks up the vibrations and passes them out of your mouth as Pressure waves in the atmospheric air.

3..Blowing across the bottle causes a change in the resonance by causing pressure changes within the bottle.

These changes range from slightly positive to slightly 'negative' (vacuum), pressures.

  3. 2.  Air from your lungs passes over the vibrating vocal chords, making sound

    3.  cool Q.  none of those.  the bottle is pressurized and de-pressurized, and makes a noise when the mode changes.  i used to work with fans, and i know this is true.  you can even see it.  get a very large bottle, and someone who smokes, and watch the smoke as you blow across the bottle.

however, if you must choose from the list,

The top of the bottle gets cold, making a squeaking sound  <== NO

Air starts to circulate and vibrate in the bottle, making a sound <== this is a really poor description of what happens.

You must blow into the bottle for anything to happen <== NO
