can rats go throughout there whole pregnancy without having a noticibly enlarged abdomen?

Yes, especially if the litter is small. Remember the gestation period is only 23 days, so if it's been longer than that, she's not pregnant.

You should also look for enlarged nipples and, in the last 24 hours, nesting behavior. Also you may notice a personality change: a previously sweet girl-rat may start to bite.
