A car was stopped on stop sign at a curvy exit of a freeway. Because the exit was curvy, the driver (A) advanced his car about 1 feet just so she could have a better view of the incoming traffic before she merge in. The car behind thought that driver A was accelerating, and so B accelerated too and unfortunately rear ended car A at the corner of car A bumper on the passenger’s side.

The surface area of the damage was 3” radius at the left side bumper --the driver A side.

Question 1) : suppose driver B hit driver A at the middle of the bumper, would the impact be less on the driver A? (impact is the force that driver A feels)

Question 2) : suppose the same weight and speed exerted on car A by car B but the surface area was greater than 3” radius, would the impact on the driver A be less--assuming that nothing else is changed….driver A in the same position etc. ?

please help, I need to present this word problem in more scientific form, like adding terms such as velocity, force, acceleration, .speed anything that you think is involved, I would look for the formulas and study them.

  1. There is no definitive way any of the 'facts' of the case can be related to impact or injury damage.  Judges and lawyers relate to statue law, not physical law.

Don't be a victim; be the aggressor.  Get a pit bull personal injury lawyer and go after the driver of the other vehicle.  He is the one with ultimate responsibility for your loss.

And don't mention anything about backing into a pole.

  2. 1) the impact on the driver would be more, since all of the energy goes into linear acceleration.  A side hit also produces rotation (angular acceleration) which has less of an impact, and the energy going into the rotation reduces the linear acceleration.  Linear acceleration produces a force on the driver's head which is what causes whiplash.

    2) a larger area of damage means more energy from the moving car was taken up by the deformation of metal and less is available to accelerate the stopped car.  Therefore, the larger area means less impact on the driver.

  3. What Steve and gp have said are correct. In dealing with lawyers you need one that is aggressive for You and do not settle for anyone that is not going to represent You. Bottom line is money talks and ...BS...walks!
