A falcon dives at a pigeon. The falcon starts with zero downward velocity and falls with the acceleration of gravity. If the pigeon in 76 meters below the initial height of the falcon, how long does it take the falcon to intercept the pigeon?

  1. is the pigeon moving at all? or are you assuming the pigeon is stationary?

    without any further details, we have to assume that the pigeon is stationary...

    basically, we have to figure out how long it takes to fall due to gravity and cover 76 meters, for this we use the equation:

    dist = v0t+1/2 gt^2 where v0 is the initial speed (here, v0=0)

    76=1/2 9.8 t^2

    or t^2=15.5 to t=3.94 s


  2. Use the formula:

    s=1/2*g*t^2

    76=1/2*9.8*t^2

    solving for t

    t= sqr((2 * 76) / 9.8) = 3.938 seconds
