11 J of heat are removed from a gas sample while it is being compressed by a piston that does 21 J of work.

What is the change in the thermal energy of the gas? (in J)

AND

does the temperature of gas increase or decrease?

  1. Gas compression causes temperature increase....

    As it's being cooled by 11J during compression which would have added 21 J to the gas, then 10J are actually added as thermal energy.

    Its temperature will therefore increase..
