A cup of water is heated with a heating coil that delivers 110 W of heat.

In one minute, the temperature of the water rises by 19 degrees C. What is the mass of the water?

  1. Use the equation   Q = mc(Tf - Ti)

    c is a constant for whatever is being heated   4.19J/gC

    Remember that the watt (W) is really Joule/second

    So just multiply the time by the power to find the heat.

          110W(60s) = 6600J

    Plug into the equation and solve for m

    6600 = m(4.19)(19)

    m = 872.90g
