  1. heat of fusion of ice is 334 kJ/kg

    specific heat of ice is 2.06 kJ/kgC

    First we have to raise the ice to the melting point. energy required to do that is:

    E = 2.06 kJ/kgC x 1 kg x 12C = 24.7 kJ

    We have 40 kJ, so subtract 24.7 kJ from that, leaving 15.3 kJ which can be applied to melting ice.

    15.3 kJ = 334 kJ/kg x M

    M = 0.0458 kg of ice is melted.
