A 21 kg loudspeaker is suspended 3.0 m below the ceiling by two cables that are each 40 degrees from vertical.

What is the tension in the cables?

  1. Hmm..i don't get why you would need the 3 meters distance.

    Anyhow, i think it can be solved without the 3 meters.

    So you basically have the weight being equal to double the projection of the tension on the y axis (vertical axis). Therefore:

    m * g = 2 * Ty

    Ty = T * cos(40)

    Therefore T = m*g/(2*cos(40))
