a 2100 lb airplane requires a power of 100.0 hp at the propeller to climb at an angle of 20 degrees to the horizontal at constant speed. How much altitude could it gain in 10 minutes if air resistance is ignored?

Please show any formula used and answer

  1. The engine is lifting the plane against gravity, doing work.  You can calculate the rate of climb by equating the 100hp against the rate of increase of potential energy, and therefore get the total altitude gained in 10 mins.

    Let me know if you need more assistance.  I will probably have to convert to kg and kW, not being in America!

  2. uuhhh.. sorry but not in school, once I'm done with a year, my brain's temporarily on vacation..sry ;(

  3. E = 100 HP*550 ft∙lb/HP∙sec*600 sec = 33E6 ft∙lb

    E = F*h → h = E/F = 33E6 ft∙lb/2100 lb

    h = 15714 ft

  4. Well divide lbs by 2.25

  5. A power of 100.0 hp at the propeller to climb

    at constant speed. Since speed is constant the planes

    kinetic energy remains constant. Hence, all the

    energy supplied by the engine is converted into:

    potential energy.

    100hp * 746w/hp*600s =44,760,000 joules = 33,013,282 foot pounds.

    Potential energy = weight x height

    33013282=2100*h

    height =   33013282/2100

    = 15720.61 feet

    Thank you steve.
