A whale swims due east for a distance of 7.6 km, turns around and goes due west for 1.3 km, and finally turns around again and heads 2.1 km due east.

What is the magnitude?

I don't understand how to find the magnitude without having a time (s) to divide by.... so, what to do. =[.

  1. They just want the magnitude of the distance the fatty whale swam:

    7.6 - 1.3 + 2.1 = 8.4 km East

    So the magnitude is just 8.4 km

  2. Magnitude of what? Displacement or distance?

    Distance = 7.6 + 1.3 + 2.1 = 11 km

    To find magnitude of displacement, assume east as positive direction.

    Displacement = 7.6 - 1.3 + 2.1 = 8.4 km
