if an object falls five meters during the first interval of time, how far will it fall during the second interval of time?

  1. Let:

    s1 and s2 be the two distances fallen,

    t be the time in one 'interval',

    g be the acceleration due to gravity.

    s1 = gt^2 / 2 ...(1)

    s1 + s2 = g(2t)^2 / 2 ...(2)

    Subtracting (1) from (2):

    s2 = g(4t^2 - t^2) / 2

    = 3gt^2 / 2

    = 3s1.

    s1 = 5m.

    Therefore s2 = 15m.
