When the matchbox is thrown from the cart, in what direction does it go? Explain your answer.

  1. the matchbox does not get thrown from the cart... that requires another force...

    However the matchbox does "leave" the cart. because the matchbox was going forward then it continues forward... only the cart is stopped. This is called "momentum".

    It is the same thing that makes you move forward when you brake suddenly in your car, or when you move to the side when the car turns sharply.
