11J of heat are removed from a gas sample while it is being compressed by a piston that does 21J of work.

What is the change in the thermal energy of the gas?

  1. thermal energy equals heat plus the work done on the gas

    the thermal energy goes down 11J for the heat removed and up 21J for the work the piston does on the gas.  So the total change is +10J

    The temperature goes up
