A 100kg man is inching his way along an extremely slick icy road, when a large animal bounds up at 8m/s and collides with him. They both slide together in a tangled heap at 3m/s.

What is the mass of the animal?

  2. V/v = (M + m)/m; where m = ? the bigfoot mass, V = 8 mps, v = 3 mps, and M = 100 kg.  Solve for m.

    (M + m)v = Mv + mv = mV; so that m(V - v) = Mv and m = (v/(V - v))M, you can do the math.

This solution assumes no energy losses due to deformation during the collision.  It is an ideal, unrealistic conservation of momentum problem.
