Question

A ship at sea sounds a whistle blast, and an echo returns from the coastal land 10 s later.

How many km is it to the coastal land if the air temperature is 10 degrees C.

speed of sound in air at 10 C is 337.463m/s

distance= speed*time

               = 337.463*10

               = 3374.63m

                      or

                   approx. 3.4 km

The speed of sound in air is approximately 340 meters per second, varying somewhat with temperature.  So the round trip distance is 3400 meters, or 1700 meters each way.  The exact speed of sound is proportional to the square root of the absolute temperature, but does not vary with pressure.
