A ball is thrown horizontally at 22.2 m/s from the roof of a building and lands 36.0 m from the base of the building. How high is the building?

  2. (36m)/(22.2m/s) = 1.622s

    As the acceleration due to gravity is -9.8m/s^2 the equation for displacement is

    D(x) = -4.9x^2 + 0x (the initial velocity down) + C (the height of the building)

    D(1.622) = 0 = -4.9(1.622)^2 + C

    C = 12.88 m

    Therefore the building is 12.88 meters high.
