2. A horse canters away from its trainer in a straight line, moving 160m away in 17.0s. It then turns abruptly and gallops halfway back in 6.8s calculate (a) the average speed and (b) its average velocity for the entire trip, using “away from the trainer” as the positive direction.

  1. a) Average speed= ((160/17)+(80/6.8))/2=(9.41+11.76)/2= 10.59 m/s

    b) Average velocity= 80/(17+6.8)= 3.36 m/s
