  1. the cold air was absorbed by the carpet.

  2. The carpet is an insulator, so the heat being emitted from his feet is not conducted away and so the carpet feels warm , unlike the marble which is a good conductor. The heat from his feet is conducted rapidly away from his feet by the marble so it feels cold.

  3. Heat transfer occurs by several ways out of which conduction is most significant.  Marble being a better conductor draws heat from the feet of the person when it is at a lower temperature than the body. although carpet is also at the same temperature as the marble (being in the same air conditioned room), it being a comparatively bad conductor does not draw away the heat from Mark's body. Had he touched a metal part or stepped on to a metal sheet he would have felt colder still.  The answer given by cunny is also similar to my answer.

  4. marble floor is a conductor and carpet is an insulator.
